Frequently Asked Questions

Your shoes will be made to order for you here in our Totnes workshop. Please allow at least 3 weeks and up to 8 weeks. At busy times of the year eg. Christmas, sometimes it can take a little longer if we have lots of orders. If you would like to know the completion date before you order please feel free to give us a call and we can tell you exactly when they shall arrive with you. Do let us know if you have a particular event you need them for and we will do our best to accommodate that.

Absolutely. Simply send us an email or give us a call to let us know the sort of colours or finishes you would like and we will post you some samples to look at and feel at home.

We do! And only us. We currently have three shoemakers in our small workshop, Katie, Simon and Christian. You can’t get a genuine pair of Conkers made for you anywhere else in the world.

All our styles are completely made by hand from start to finish here in our Totnes workshop. We have been making shoes since 1977 and will continue to do so with your support and loyalty.

Yes! We post shoes all over the world, especially the US and Eurpoe.

Please note due to Brexit, parcels going outside the UK may take a little longer to get through and you may need to pay a customs charge upon parcel delivery. Custom charges are different for each country so please ask your local postal service about the charge before you order.

Simply order your usual shoe size, eg: 6 ½. If you need a wider fitting then choose ‘wide’. We will simply make your shoes in your usual size. Easy.

If you normally find it very difficult to find shoes to fit, then you might want to send us foot drawings. Follow the instructions at We will then contact you to discuss your fitting.

Simply send them back to us for a re-build. We take your shoes apart and rebuild them, re-last them to your pattern and give the leather a feed. Let us know your name and contact details and we will find your fitting card and last pattern. All you need to do is choose which type of sole you would like this time. We will contact you when we receive them and advise you of their return date.

For more information see our RESOLE & REPAIR page.

Yes, we should do. We never throw an order card away. All your fitting information and shoe history, including any modifications, is here waiting for you to send your shoes back for resoling! We can make you a new pair in the same style or advise you how a different style will fit.

Our shoes are not vegan.

We use high quality leather with rubber soling. They are designed to be worn for many years in various climates, be durable, repairable and fully re-solable. Experience has taught us that the leather and rubber soling we use are the best materials for this job and produce the minimum environmental impact possible due to the durability. To get the most from the leather it is advisable to use a good quality care product.

We are always on the look out for new vegan materials to use but we haven’t quite found one yet.

We offer a modified fit service. This allows us to give you a little bit if extra space ‘here or there’ for length, width or space for a joint, just where you need it without compromising the good fit of the rest of your shoe. We do not currently offer a full made-to-measure service where we draft patterns from scratch.

We always recommend that you be fitted properly in the shop if you need to wear inserts in your shoes. They can affect the fit in many different ways, not just by taking out space inside. However some styles are much more accommodating than others. For example a lace-up style will be more flexible in fit than a pull-on style and if you normally find taking a half size bigger sufficient on the high street, then the same will probably apply to your Conkers

Yes! This part of Devon is especially beautiful and people often plan a mini-break or longer around their visit to Conker.

If you’d like to stay in Totnes, getting to us by rail, car or bus is easy and it’s a great town to hang out in. For more info visit .

Try your new shoes on indoor first. Shoes CAN NOT be returned if they have been worn outside and are in an unsaleable condition.
Please telephone us within 3 weeks on 01803 862490 or email us if they don’t fit correctly and we can advise you on the next steps

For standard sized shoes we will alter, remake or refund the cost if they are returned to us unworn and in a saleable condition within 21 days. We do not cover the cost of postage as this cost is not factored into our shoe prices.

For modified fitted shoes (non standard size) if there is an alteration that needs making we will alter or remake the shoes for you if they are returned to us unworn within 21 days of receiving them. Please note that sometimes modified shoes need adjusting after they have been made. This is so we can get them just right for you.

Sale Shoes
Shoes bought in the shop in our annual sale are non-returnable and are sold as seen.
Shoes bought online in our annual shoe sale can be returned. Please return them within 10 days or purchase

The patterns we use are tried and tested and can be modified to some extent if needs be. Each maker has their own set of lasts particular to their shoes. By choosing a combination of sole and leather to suit you, you have a big influence in how your shoes look and feel. It is not ethically sound to copy someone else’s design. It is also much more difficult than you would imagine and the time involved would make the cost prohibitive.

We often find people have different sized feet, whether they are half a size different or 3 sizes different. As your shoes are made to order we can absolutely make you a pair of shoes which are different sizes. The cost for this is the same price as a normal pair of shoes as there is no modification needed. If you are unsure what size to order please contact us and we can advise on the best way to measure your feet.

Yes! We don’t use shanks in our soles which means they are extremely flexible and comfortable.
